The concept of glamping has been around for several years, however it’s only started to kick off in New Zealand recently. A new term derived from the words “glamorous” and “camping”, the idea is to bring luxury and comfort into nature, in beautiful locations that are off the beaten track.
Less than an hour from Auckland, above the wild Kariotahi beach, lies Castaways, a resort with 4 different remote glamping locations.
Upon arrival, you are greeted warmly by the hosts, given a map and keys to a golf buggy, then simply pointed in the right direction. The road to the tent site is a fun, bumpy ride over the hills, which ends in the most spectacular views of the roaring west coast.
The tent itself comes with all the luxuries one would expect when staying in a nice hotel – a huge, comfortable King size bed, fluffy robes, central heating and a nice bottle of red wine waiting to be opened.
At Castaways, everything is taken care of so all the usual hassles of camping aren’t even on your radar. The fridge is fully stocked with pre-prepared dinner and breakfast, so all you need to do is fire up the BBQ and cook the gourmet meal you have chosen in advance.
During your stay, you’ll want to spend as much time enjoying the view as possible and nothing could be more relaxing than lying in a hot bubble bath with a glass of wine, looking out over the stunning scenery. Once the sun slowly goes down, there’s the added bonus of star gazing whilst wrapped up in a warm blanket.
Glamping at Castaways is the ultimate romantic getaway and offers a luxurious touch to our nation’s favourite holiday pastime. There are very few places in the world that could compete with this unique experience, it’s definitely one for the bucket list.
